Location:

Luddenham, NSW

Saunders was awarded a significant contract by Multiplex to build the aviation fuel terminal at the new Western Sydney International Airport, also known as Nancy Bird Walton Airport. This project showcases Saunders’ ability to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary solutions by bringing together a team specialising in Bulk Fluid Storage and Industrial Automation and Electrical.

The contract includes the design and construction of:

  • Three aviation fuel storage tanks
  • The aviation fuel terminal’s mechanical piping, valves, pumps, filters, instrumentation, and controls
  • The aviation fuel terminal’s electrical services, including cabling and switchboards, SCADA electrical, and controls

Separately, the independent Piping Solutions business was appointed to deliver a new hydrant line, involving the installation and commissioning of 10.5 km of aviation fuel hydrant lines, leveraging Saunders’ expertise in fuel infrastructure. Additional SMP works were also secured to connect the newly installed fuel hydrant main system to the fuel farm facility.

This project highlights the value of Saunders’ piping expertise in providing a one-stop solution to clients, reinforcing its commitment to delivering multidisciplinary, integrated capabilities.

Location:

Darwin, NT

Saunders successfully delivered a critical infrastructure project as part of the Larrakeyah Defence Precinct Redevelopment Program (LDPRP), with Laing O’Rourke serving as the Managing Contractor.

The project involved the design and construction of four new bulk fuel storage tanks alongside the installation of:

  • Fuel quarantine and sampling systems
  • Offloading and dispensing filtration and pump stations
  • Electrical and instrumentation systems
  • Safety and process control systems

Saunders also connected these systems to site-wide piping and wharf hydrant lines at one of Australia’s major operational defence bases.

Location:

Katherine, NT

Saunders was appointed to two projects at RAAF Base Tindal, located south of Darwin. The initial scope of work included the design and construction of two new bulk fuel tanks, subcontracted through the Nova Nacap Joint Venture, which is contracted by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Pacific, US Department of Defence.

The project strengthened Saunders’ relationship with repeat client Nova Nacap while enhancing its capability and track record within the Defence sector.

Separately, in 2022, the independent Piping Solutions business was sub-subcontracted to install critical fuel infrastructure for the new Australian Defence Force Fuel Farm at RAAF Base Tindal.

This project included the installation of:

  • A gantry building
  • A filter building
  • Pumphouses
  • An underground line linking to the USAF refuelling system
  • A complex network of valves and large turbine pumps

This project further highlights the value of Saunders’ acquisition of Piping Solutions.

Location:

Garden Island, WA

Saunders was engaged to deliver three successive projects at HMAS Stirling, integrating a total of 61 substations across the naval base.

Drawing on our specialist Automation and Electrical capability, the works modernised and optimised the site’s critical power infrastructure, improving efficiency, reliability and operational resilience.

These projects demonstrate Saunders’ capacity to deliver complex, high-security works in live Defence environments while meeting stringent technical and security requirements.

Saunders was awarded a contract to replace five existing timber bridges across the Port Macquarie Hastings Council area with concrete bridges.

The new concrete bridges will reduce future ongoing maintenance costs for the Council and increase connectivity by allowing increased vehicle load limits.

The project is funded by Port Macquarie Hastings Council and Transport for NSW under the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Bridges Program.

Location:

Melbourne, VIC

Saunders Aqua Metro is delivering a critical infrastructure upgrade on behalf of Greater Western Water to support Melbourne’s growing population and ensure long-term reliability of sewerage services in the CBD.

The project involves constructing approximately 750 metres of new sewer pipeline beneath Flinders Lane, Spencer Street, Siddeley Street and Wurundjeri Way and the construction of five new shafts (8-12m deep) along the new sewer alignment.

Once complete, the new infrastructure will double the capacity of the existing sewer network – originally built in the late 1800s – and futureproof the system for decades to come. This upgrade is part of a broader investment in sustainable, resilient water infrastructure for inner Melbourne.

Sunbury, VIC

The project involves the design and construction of two 10ML potable water storage tanks and 1.7km of DN900 MSCL pipelines, along with an access track, chemical dosing facility, and bulk earthworks on a greenfield site.

It will double the area’s drinking water storage, securing supply for up to 10,000 properties.

Engaged by Aqua Metro, Saunders is delivering the project under an expedited program, minimising disruption through close supply chain collaboration and concurrent tank construction.

Location:

Kangaroo Flat, VIC

The Bendigo WTP is located in the Kangaroo Flat area, South of Bendigo, and it supplies potable water to around 100,000 customers from the Sandhurst Reservoir via Bendigo’s Potable Water Distribution System. The plant, with a capacity of 126 ML/day, has been in service since 2002 and it is owned and operated by Veolia under a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) contract on behalf of Coliban Water.

The project is for the supply, installation and commission of a new UV Disinfection System and the construction of a Chlorine Contact concrete Tank including all civil, mechanical, electrical and control works:

  • Civil Earthwork and Site Preparation
  • Construction of a 40mL x 10mW x 6mH concrete tank
  • 4 UV reactors and building
  • 1200NB MSCL and 700NB SS piping

Control system upgrades including PLC and SCADA modifications.

Location:

Brushy Creek, VIC

The Brushy Creek Recycled Water (RW) Infrastructure project will deliver infrastructure to supply developments and irrigators located in Croydon, Chirnside Park and Lilydale with Class A Recycled Water. The new infrastructure delivered through this project will remove reliance on the potable water network, enabling the removal of temporary cross connections and ultimately reducing potable water consumption.

The project is for the construction of:

  • Plantes Hill Reservoir: A 2.1ML capacity welded steel tank, located at the existing Plantes Hill site, to the south of the existing Lilydale Reservoir.
  • Stage 3 upgrade of the Brushy Creek Recycled Water Pump Station: The existing pump station is located at Brushy Creek Recycled Water Treatment Plant.
  • Plantes Hill Inlet/Outlet Main: A DN225 non-tapping bi-directional main. which allows pumping from Brushy Creek Recycled Water Pump Station to supply the network direct to zone or supply the network via gravity from Plantes Hill Reservoir.
  • Dorset Road PRS: An above ground Pressure Reducing Station (PRS), which reduces pressure to ensure that the supply to The Range estate is within allowable limits.

Fletcher Road PRS: An above ground PRS, which reduces pressure to ensure that the supply to The Gardens estate and future Chirnside PAC is within allowable limits.

Location:

Melton, VIC

The project involved the design and construction of a new 30 ML potable water storage tank to replace the existing 20 ML tank. The scope included the safe demolition and removal of the existing tank and associated infrastructure, followed by the decommissioning and removal of pipelines.

New MSCL pipework and valves were supplied and installed to support the upgraded system. Additionally, the existing drainage system was removed and replaced with a new one to accommodate the revised layout and capacity.

The project also delivered several infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a new crane pad, the installation of new asphalt pavement around the tank, and upgrades to unsealed access roads.

Electrical upgrades were undertaken to support the new infrastructure. This included the installation of a new SCADA system, updated telemetry, and reprogramming of the PLC to ensure full integration with the enhanced system. The electrical system was comprehensively updated to suit the requirements of the new infrastructure and improve overall operational reliability.

Bellarine Peninsula, VIC

The Portarlington Water Recycling Plant (WRP), covering 120 hectares with 80 hectares devoted to tree lots, has been operational since 1982 and primarily uses a unique lagoon system for water treatment and storage. The system consists of four lagoons working in pairs in a batch mode, where facultative lagoons (1 and 2) alternate with maturation lagoons (3 and 4) to achieve Class C recycled water quality. This treated water supports onsite irrigation and a transfer pump feeds recycled water to local vineyards and a golf course.

The current system faces challenges such as managing algal blooms and seasonal water levels to ensure adequate storage capacity. To enhance water quality and expand reuse options, the project is to install a Salt Reduction Plant (SRP) capable of producing 3.0 ML/day of Class B salt-reduced recycled water. The SRP will involve several treatment steps including coarse screening, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and chlorination, aiming to reduce salinity and meet strict water quality targets. This upgrade is crucial for meeting growing demand for recycled water on the Peninsula, potentially reaching up to 1,250 ML/year.

Saunders’ multidisciplinary in-house engineering and operational teams collaborated with long-term client Quantem to value engineer, optimise constructability, and conduct a full lifecycle analysis for this critical diesel storage project in Adelaide.

The scope of work includes:

This project adds significant new diesel storage capacity for South Australia’s fuel industry.

Barron Gorge, QLD

The Barron Gorge Hydro sources water from the Barron River to generate electricity before releasing the water back into the river. With the ability to quickly start its two 33 MW generators, the facility is a critical asset for providing a secure and reliable energy supply for Queensland.

Saunders Automation was contracted by CleanCo Queensland to deliver a complete turn-key control system upgrade for the dual turbine 66 MW power station. The scope included:

  • PLC and SCADA systems
  • OT network infrastructure
  • Installation, testing, and commissioning

Perth, WA

ECU City is a significant project for Edith Cowan University, featuring a 65,000 square metre campus spanning 11 levels across two towers located within Perth’s CBD. Construction is well underway and is set to be completed by the end of 2025.

Saunders has been engaged to provide a turn-key solution for the emergency power network control and site-wide energy management system. Our scope of work includes design, procurement, construction, programming, and commissioning.

We were selected for this project due to our industry leading expertise and the utilisation of state-of-the-art operational technology (OT) solutions. Our innovative approach and commitment to excellence ensure that ECU City will have a robust and efficient energy management system, supporting the university’s needs for years to come.

Saunders was awarded a contract by Ampol to design and construct a 31-metre-wide, 20-metre-high jet fuel storage tank at its Lytton Refinery in the Port of Brisbane.

The project formed part of Ampol’s Future Fuels Desulphurisation Project, which enhanced Australia’s fuel security and delivered lower-emission fuels for customers.

Delivered within a live operating environment, Saunders worked closely with Ampol’s operational team to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of aviation fuels to airports throughout construction.

Kalgoorlie, WA

Saunders was awarded a contract by Northern Star Resources to undertake the CIL3 Tanks Replacement project at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) in Western Australia.

The project involves the reconstruction and upgrade of six carbon-in-leach (CIL) tanks, each measuring 12.7 metres in diameter and 13.5 metres in height. The scope also includes associated pipework, structural steel, and interconnecting launders within a complex brownfield environment.

The project aims to increase throughput and enhance the reliability of the Fimiston Processing Plant by upgrading the third bank of CIL tanks. Saunders’ advanced construction methodology ensures the plant remains fully operational throughout the project, minimising shutdowns and maintaining continuous revenue for Northern Star Resources.

This project highlights Saunders’ growing presence in Western Australia, supported by the establishment of a regional office in Perth.

Kalgoorlie, WA

Saunders has been awarded a million contract by Primero for the construction of eight carbon-in-leach (CIL) tanks, seven supporting process tanks, and interconnecting launders at Northern Star Resources’ Fimiston Processing Plant in Kalgoorlie, WA.

This package supports the plant’s increased throughput and marks Saunders’ second major project at the site, following a contract awarded in May 2024.

The project further strengthens Saunders’ presence in Western Australia’s Resources & Industrials sector and highlights our capability to deliver complex tank and process infrastructure in live mining environments.

Gladstone, QLD

Saunders successfully replaced 470 metres of gas pipeline beneath the Boyne River, supporting Australia’s east coast energy needs.

The project presented significant challenges, including proximity to a high-pressure gas line, one of the world’s busiest coal ports at Gladstone, harsh environmental conditions, and the remote location.

Saunders collaborated with the client and HDD partner, Maxibor Australia, to safely deliver the project with zero incidents under these demanding conditions.
